First of all, what is a computer registry? I was told to have that cleaned in order for my computer to run better. Now it’s so slow!
And is there a really good free program out there that I can install that takes care of that stuff for me?

The computer registry is basically a big database of settings and information, which allows Windows to ‘remember’ your personalized details, like your desktop wallpaper and even your latest emails. The registry is extremely important, nad the reason why you need a registry cleaner tool is because it’s constantly getting corrupted, making the settings extremely hard to read… slowing your PC down.
You can get free cleaners such as CCleaner or Glary Utilities. But be warned – getting free cleaners like CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com) only find like 30-50 errors on your PC and do NOT do a very good job.
It’s a myth that these free tools are effective. You can see a video I made here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=re6-PN5KH0s showing the difference between the free cleaners and the premium ones.
From my experience, you’re best using either a tool called "RegCure", "RegAce" or "Registry Mechanic". Registry Mehanic has a bunch of features like a memory optimizer but it doesn’t do a very good job of scanning unfortuantely. I prefer to use a tool called "RegCure" which you can find at http://www.fastregistryfixes.com/best_registry_cleaner_tools.html
1. I will tell you what registry is.
Registry loads at boot time, so applications use the registry entries more quickly than use external configuration files at startup. Microsoft designed the Registry to give applications a unified place to store configuration information. However, if registry is too big, it will consume a lot of system resources.
Why there are so many registry optimizers or cleaners exist? This is because too much garbage in the registry: application software produces garbage, Windows itself creates the registry trash ,too, e.g. Office, NET Framework, are software writing a huge number of registered information. Registry of Windows Vista has been estimated that at least twice that of Windows XP.
If registry is bloated or with errors, it will be true that computer performance will be strongly impacted. That’s why we need to scan and delete the redundancy and error messages, the redundant DLL information, the survival uninstallation information, and other redundant information of the registry from time to time. Learn more about registry, you can take a look at http://www.system-tools-software.com/knowledge/why-need-registry-cleaner-optimizer.html
2.how to clean up registry?
Firstly, you can clean up registry by yourself. Open the Start menu. Click "Run”, and type "regedit" into the text field and press "Enter". It is separated into primary sections: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, HKEY_CURRENT_USER, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, HKEY_USERS and HKEY_CURRENT CONFIG. Click the plus to find and delete unnecessary entries in the registry.
It is with high risk to do so if you are not a registry expert. The wrong deleting or modification in registry will lead a computer crack. Personally, I prefer the second way, i.e. download or buy a stable and safe registry optimizer and scan registry. If you know little about registry, it is highly recommended to use registry optimizer. Personally, I think that it is really useful and safe to use Wondershare Registry Optimizer to clean up registry, fix registry errors and then speed up computer.
There are plenty of info to tell you about the registry. Just put the keyword in Google search engine registry.
Whoever told you that fed you a myth. Using the registry cleaner will not make your computer run better. If a program is not working, simply a re-installation is normally sufficient. I haven’t got a registry cleaner and haven’t used one in over a year. I can tell you this for a fact, every applications and windows related problems I’ve had, not once a registry cleaner solve my problems.
Clean your temp files out, defrag your files, manage your startups and add/remove are the areas you need to look at to improve your performance. Inevitably, like all things in life, our OS is susceptible to wear and tear. You can use all the programs in the world, but you will at some point have to do a format and clean install of Windows or re-set to factory settings again.

A brand new PC has a perfectly organized windows registry and thus all the applications are performed at lightening speed. But when it gets older, the windows registry gets filled with unnecessary registry entries and the user experiences error messages. Even a minor registry error results in abnormal functioning of your PC.
Manual Registry Cleaning:
if you are technically competent, then you can manually clean the windows registry. A minor change in the registry entry can make your operating system useless. So you should be very careful while modifying the registry entries. Unless you are 100% confident about your system configuration including system registry keys, folders and settings, do not dare to touch it.
Before you start editing the registry entries, you need to take the back up of the registry. Follow the path: Start –> All Programs –> Accessories –> System Tools –> Back Up
After backing up all the registry files, then restart the PC and press F8 even before the windows starts. Choose Safe Mode and press Enter.
Then type the following commands one after another: cd windows (then enter), attrib -r -h -s system.dat (then enter), attrib -r -h -s system.da0 (then enter), attrib -r -h -s user.dat (then enter), attrib -r -h -s user.da0 (then enter), ren system.dat system.daa (then enter), ren system.da0 system.da1 (then enter), ren user.dat user.daa (then enter), ren user.da0 user.da1 (then enter), copy system.bak system.dat (then enter), copy user.bak user.dat (then enter)
You shouldn’t be messing with your registry if you do not know what it is. You could really mess up your computer.
I just what to support what others said. The registry is nothing to mess with. It is real easy to make a working computer not work by doing something in the registry.
contrary to popular belief, cleaning your registry does not improve the performance of your computer. also, like the other dude sed, if you dont know what it is, you dont know how to fix a problem if cleaning the registry results in a problem..in which case your computer is screwed =/
Get CCleaner. It cleans your hard drive of useless temporary files, ect and also does the registry.

If you don’t know what a registry is or does you certainly should not be messing around with it. You can really break your operating system.
Don’t do it.
