You’re probably suffering from bloatware: more and more applications needed, from virus scanners to e-mail scanners to automatic updaters, etc. WIndows is swapping apps in and out of memory on to hard disk storage, which makes things very slow.
Simplest fix is to upgrade your memory, for less than $100 you can add a gigabyte or two.
First disable all the crap in your lower right hand corner.
Start->Run-> (type in) "msconfig" (hit enter) -> (A dialog box should open) -> Click on the last tab "start up"
You can pretty much uncheck just about every damn thing here… leave RunDLL32.dll… if you have anti-virus (and I hope you do) leave that checked…. but for the most part all this is just crap you don’t need. I personally only have my firewall and my antivirus booting up… so I have only 2 boxes checked.
2nd Probally gonna want to get and install the following applications… At least get the first one.
Spyboy Search and Destroy (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Spybot_Search_and_Destroy/1043809773/1)
Avast (if you don’t have Anti-virus its free and personally like it better than norton)
http://www.avast.com
Tuneuputilities (SOOO much better than system mechanic)
http://www.tuneuputilities.com
ZoneAlarm (I LOVE this firewall and its free, don’t get the package just get the firewall)
http://www.zonealarm.com
(you might not understand this or want it… but if you really want protection this is it)
NTREGOPT (will defrag and optimize your registry)
After you have all that crap gone run your defrag
My Computer -> Right click C drive -> Properties – > tools -> Defrag..
Your computer should be running smooth after this….but if you really wanna sqeeze the juice you can look up all the useless services running… My computer runs lean and mean.
I have XP running on less than 200mb of memory
(No page file)
AMD 6000 X2
4 Gigs Corsair memory
8800GTS
WD Raptor
Good luck
Ok I beleef yah compootah can do a nice little makeova. First, yah start off wit a security scan using dah antivirus and anitspyware(If yah have one) if not yah betta go to http://www.downloads.com fah som nice programs. Make sure yah have a firewall tah block any viruses and spyware from gettin in(I suggest comodo firewall). Second, don’t hope to get to dis step until aftah mebbe 2 hours accordin to yah specs. Okay so yah go to da My Computer and right-click dah hard drive dat u aw currently using and go to properties. Click the tools tab and unda error-checking click check now. Check both of de boxes en dah popup menu. If yah have multiple drives I suggest ye check each one. If yah lookin at me an sayin whaddafuxup lemme tell ye ya gonna get a message afta ya do the check now. Restat yah compootah. Yah compootah is gonna scan on the startup. Den yah defragment ya hard disk an yah memory an yah registry. Look up google fo any software dat do deese tings
delete cookies, history, and temp files everyday……
run this this program its free—–http://www.ccleaner.com/
google running processes and disable thru msconfig, and services…….look up how to tweek windows, turn off eye candy, etc…….theres a ton of things that you can do…….
clean disk………and defrag once a week…….and run a/v and spyware scans often………that will get ya some performance, nothing earth shattering, but ya should notice some difference……….scott
I’m going to tell you what the next 3-10 people are going to tell you. Defrag your hard drive
First go to:
My Computer>Right Click your Local Disk (C Drive)>Properties
Now you have a dialog box, at the top there are various tabs, click on the tab that is labeled ‘Tools’. If your computer is slow, I’d do the error checking AND defragmentation. But be warned, if you haven’t defragged your hard drive in say, a few years, it’s going to take a loooonnngg time. One time I hadn’t defragged in over 3 years, and it took me 3 days to do it.
run MSCONFIG and disable all of the crap that starts up with windows.
Install Linux
Try System Mechanic.
free down load called c cleaner Yahoo Search. it will clean all kinds of stuff.
