My computer is getting full of junk.
Anyone know a good (hopefully free) utility to clean my windows XP system out?
Thanks!

I would advise against using "compressing" your HD for a main reason, and it is not necessary while HD prices are dirty cheap. Here’s the main reason: if you are keeping compress all your files, it will take time to compressing the files, and later on, you want to use the files again, computer would take time to uncompress the file again. You’re talking about compressing and uncompressing everytime you want to use a file..what about many files? do you have time for that? I thought so.
pretty large topic and plenty of area to cover, but if you just want to reorganize the drive (on a small scale) just go to start>all programs>system tools>defragment; while there do disk cleanup; a nifty freeware item is ‘crap cleaner’ avail. at snapfiles.com ( but be carefull with the settings, they delete all the checked stuff) and once its set to your needs, runs quite nicely.
after you do this, make sure you are ‘compressing’ the drive contents: my computer>c drive>properties (by right click)>and here under ‘general’ tab check both the boxes at the bottom of the pg. (‘compress….’ and index….’). at first it’s gonna say some wild time for the job (like 2 days or so) but that drops drastically. it may take a couple of hours if you’ve got lots of files and had not compressed before….so get this going and go out for a beer or two and let ‘er finish…. however long it takes.
Use Ccleaner it is free and available below. It will delete temporary files, it also has a utility to uninstall unwanted program, a registry cleaner that will fix issues and a startup list where you can remove things unwanted in the list.
