Also, make sure you have anti virus software. I know that AVG anti virus is good (and free). Also, Some mentioned CCleaner. I can vouch for him. We had a professional download that onto our computer.
Both things are free. But of course, free is almost never as good as paid-for anti virus or anti-malware protection. But the top two are good, maybe the best, free programs.
You can use a registry cleaner to clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some registry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".
Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you’ve installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it’s Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Registry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!
There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

I’ve heard a registry cleaner will do it. Download.com has some
I’d also run Malwarebytes you can get that there too. it removes spyware and adware, which can really slow down a computer. In fact, I would do that before the registry cleaner.
Malwarebytes works a lot better than ad-aware.
Any icons on the screen you do not use? Get rid of "em.
Open the control panel. Any progrtams you never use? Get rid of " em. ((Be causeful, don;t get rid of anything you don;t know what it is, or you have a question about.))
Is your antivirus up to date??
Windows XP? All updates installed?
Get rid of cookies, internet temporary files.
Defrag? Run it.
This should help.
3 things I would do.
1. Check disk. (Start menu > programs > accessories > system tools > Check disk.
2. Download adaware or another program like it from http://www.download.com type in "Adaware" and it should say Adaware anniversary edition.
3. Defragment your computer. (Start menu > Programs > accessories > system tools > Defrag.
(Adaware is a trusted free program that gets rid of adware/spyware/malware(trojans..etc) There is a version that you can buy but that link will send you to the free version)

Download CCleaner and Defraggler. With CCleaner you can delete any files that programs leave over when you uninstall them, and it can really speed up the computer. Defraggler is a defragmentization program that works much better than the default windows defragger. They are both made by Piriform.
Also, clean out your recycle bin. CCleaner can do this for you.
Another idea might be to buy some RAM. If you are running vista with 1gB of RAM, that is a surefire way to slow your computer down. XP is less resource intensive, but you can never have too much ram.
Ram is the cheapest and most effective way to upgrade a computer. It costs anywhere from $20-$150, depending on how much you want. I have 4gB in my laptop right now.
