Well Sarah, you should first identify the problem. You might have viruses. You might also need to change your internet provider. The problem might be also that your anti-virus is slowing down your machine.
Try to identify the problem or give more details. How or when did it began to slow down.
There’s something else you can do if you use mozilla firefox. Open your browser and then in the Website address type: About:config. Then there will appear a list, so now type in the filter search : network.
Scroll down and find: network.http.pipelining, besides it will appear value and it’ll appear false. Double click and change it to true. Then right below there’s network.http.pipelining.maxrequests, change its value from 4 to 10. It will speed up your browser.
Don’t change anything else unless you know what you’re doing.

If it is slowing down there is a very good chance it is not the hard drive. Computers slow down because they don’t have enough RAM installed. The hard drive could be cluttered, though, and if you want hard drive read/write times to be faster you could defrag it. You can find it in Accessories somewhere. Otherwise, you’ll have to delete some things. Find the list of your programs in the Control Panel (it’s different between XP and Vista) and uninstall the ones you don’t need anymore.
Hope this helps.
