run (from Start button) regedit
export (their term for make a copy/backup under menu bar: file)
Make sure the export range box for ALL is checked in the popup menu…give it a name and make that copy (will be your emg backup)
There is a powerful search tool (F3) to find items in the registry, you can do a lot of damage here so be careful.
I’ve found much of the business is kept in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, but you must look everywhere to be sure.
Each regisitry location has a name and has contents, contents can be removed, changed. A specific location can be removed entirely.
That’s enough to get you in trouble, but you can always import (restore) that old copy you made.
Good luck
I use System Mechanic. It’s like Norton SystemWorks, but not as expensive. It fixes your registry, removes useless programs that start at boot, cleans up temporarily files, has a MUCH better defrag util than Windows . . . I’ve been using it for almost 7 years now and have not been disappointed.
check the registry mechanic software

CrapCleaner will help you out. Install and run it and do a check for "ISSUES". Always say YES to doing the backup.
