Upgrades rarely work well. Assuming you have a Windows XP Update CD, try this.
Before you do anythin, make sure everything is backed up – you’re about to wipe your hard disk.
Insert the Windows XP Cd into the computer and restart it – it should boot from the CD (if it doesnt, you need to make the CD drive the first boot device in bios)
Start the install process – the setup will complain that this isnt a full install, its an upgrade disk and as you to prove that you are eligible – you can either point it at your existing installation or put in a Win98 CD at this point – it only wants it so it can check you’re eligible, then it’ll ask for the XP CD back and should install a full, fresh copy of XP.
here are some details
If your XP disk it bootable, leave the disk in and boot off the XP CD. Make sure you format to NTFS and this will ensure your disk has no Windows 98 files left over. If it is an upgrade XP CD, it will ask you for a previous version of Windows CD. Just swap the XP CD for the 98 CD in the tray and that will satisfy the upgrade requirement – so essentially it will be a clean "full version" install.
Hope this helps.
