On my Acer Aspire 4250 laptop my screen went black and a "Windows Error Recovery" message appears, it says "windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause" and when I tried the Startup Repair it wouldn’t work and I couldn’t reformat it either. How do I fix it without a disk?

Even though these instructions that I’m pointing you to are for HP & Compaq computers, I think that you will find them pretty much the same as Acer laptops.

Well those laptops should have an image of the system as it was when shipped from the factory .. If you haven’t got a windows disc and cant get into windows normally then you may need to restore the image so you can get back to the factory shipped windows config (that is if you haven’t got a hardware failure like a bad hard drive that is causing the problem.
First try getting into windows safe mode by tapping F8 for boot options as soon as you turn the lappy on if you can get into safe mode with networking you can run a check disk by opening the command prompt and typing chkdsk /r and then click y to schedule a disk scan and then reboot.
You may also want to scan for spyware while in in safe mode with malwarebytes antispyware w to make sure spyware isn’t causing the problems if that does not help then read below for steps to restore your system to factory settings.
These steps will return the system to the original factory installation.Back up all important files prior to using this procedure.
Plug in the AC adapter .
Turn the system on
Immediately, press ALT on the keyboard and start tapping F10.
Continue holding ALT and tapping F10 as the unit boots up.
A screen stating "Starting Acer Erecovery" should appear.
(Release ALT and stop tapping F10 at this point)
There will be 4 options:
1. Restore system to factory default
2. Restore system from user backup
3. Restore system from cd/dvd
4. Exit
Restore system to factory default
Please note that doing this will erase any files and settings you have put on the system and set the lappy back to how it was when you first bought it. .
