i dont know about the odd sounds but sometimes a pc will freezz if dust gets in the memory modual, take the ram out and blow the dust out of the slots,AND DONT SPIT WHEN YOU BLOW THE DUST OUT.lol. If that dont help mybe hardrive is bad you did say you heard the harddrive making weird sounds.hope i helped good luck.
Definitely failing hardware, not a virus.
This is the typical symptom of a failing Power Supply Unit (Gateway machines are notorious for this). It could be dying and either undervolting (more likely) or overvolting your computer, causing it to act erractically and spontaneously freeze up. Unfortunatley, unless you have a spare PSU around to test with, you might just have to take a leap of faith and buy a new one.
It may also be the memory, which is easier to diagnose. If you have more than one stick of memory, shut down the computer and run one stick at a time in turns. If you run one and the computer doesn’t freeze up anymore, then the one you took out is bad. Replace it.
