You can run antivirus and antispyware programs, but the sad fact is if you have found one virus on your computer, you probably have several. Cleaning the computer now requires you to follow these steps, because modern viruses and spyware entrench themselves in files that your computer needs in order to run:
1. Virus-check your data files (not application files– you have installer CDs for those).
2. Back up the data files, getting them off your hard drive.
3. Get your original operating system CDs that came with your computer.
4. Boot your computer from the operating system CD.
5. Select the option that erases your hard drive and then reinstall your system software.
6. Turn on your software firewall that came with your operating system.
7. Reconnect to the internet, and download *all* Windows updates, no matter how long it takes.
8. Reinstall your application software, and update the applications as much as you can.
9. Reinstall your data files.
10. Create a limited user account on your system that does *not* have administrator access, and web surf only from this account.
Yes, this is a pain in the butt. No, there is no other way. No, antivirus and antispyware programs cannot fix this problem on its own.
So, what do you do in the future?
1. Never click on links you find in an e-mail.
2. Never open an e-mail attachment, ever.
3. Only download files from a reputable website that you know is on the up-and-up.
4. Never use bit-torrent and other file-sharing programs.
5. Never use an unsolicited drive-checking site.
6. Turn off all java and java scripting by default, and only enable java and java scripting for sites that you know you can trust.
7. Never read an unsolicited e-mail, and delete spam immediately. It is possible to be hacked by reading an e-mail alone.
Please adhere to the ‘dont’s’ I provided above, because you will have to repeat the cleaning steps that I listed first *every time you get infected.* Anti-spyware and anti-virus programs are good to have, but they are a second line of defense. The best way to protect your system is you, and changing your behavior.
Good luck!
You can use system restore on XP/Vista/Windows7 to go back to before it came about.
Well there are some things that you might be able to do. One thing if you can access safe mode with networking you might be able to save it. It really depends on how bad the infection really is. You can try to press F8 while your computer is booting and attempt to enter safe mode with networking. If you can get into safe mode you can try to download Malwarebytes and run that. I’ve found it to be a decent tool for removing many forms of spyware and especially fake security tools. If you can not access safe mode your best bet unfortunately is probably a full restore setting your unit back to factory settings. Generally that is always the best solution when it comes to severe infections as the infections can cause damage to critical system files. However like I say I have had fairly good luck with Malwarebytes removing some rather nasty infections.
Malware exorcism in nine easy steps
I posted detailed instructions with screen shots on my blog check it out (~_~)
http://trailerparkpirate.blogspot.com/2009/10/malware-exorcism-in-seven-easy-steps.html
1.Download and run this free cleaner, choose "Select all" and "Empty selected".
(Free) http://download.cnet.com/ATF-Cleaner/3000-18512_4-89432.html
2.Turn off your system restore! Right click on "My Computer and choose "Properties","System Restore tab",check the box "Turn off System Restore to all drives" and hit apply,Ok.
3.Download this free malware killer called Pocket Killbox and read the instructions and use it to kill malicious processes and hunt down infected files and delete them for good.
Download: http://www.killbox.net/downloads/KillBox.exe
Instructions: http://www.killbox.net/help.html
Check processes here:http://www.processlibrary.com/
4.Go into "Safe with networking mode" by restarting your computer and hitting F8 repeatedly at reboot, when a black/blue screen pops up choose safe with networking.
5.Download Dr web cureit to your desk top.
(Free) http://www.freedrweb.com/cureit/?lng=en
(Note) If you can’t download, do to your infection use another computer to download Dr web and BitDefender to a pendrive or burn it to a data CD and stick it in the infected computers USB/drive and copy & past the install apps to the infected computers desktop.
6.Unplug your either net cord or what ever you have to do to disconnect from the net.
7.Dbl click on the Dr web cureit app and install it and do a scan.(Don’t worry about updating it) Select "Cure it" when it asks and "Delete" when it can’t cure it.
8.Reboot into normal mode, reconnect to the net and download BitDefender free antivirus and install, update, and depending on time run either a "Deep System" scan which takes hours and cleans everything or a "System Scan" that takes minutes and will shut down most malware till you can run a deep scan?
When the scan is done delete/quarantine all entities it finds and your done.

(Note) Don’t turn on "System Restore" till your sure your clean and everything is running ok.
