while trying to delete some entries clean up a virus, I have accidentally deleted some entries that read something like %SystemRoot%\dll…..
After that, I am unable to download emails into my Outlook.
Is there anyway I can recover the deleted entries (which I cannot remember the path or value+data) without having to reformat my entire OS?
Thank you.

System Restore might do the trick, but in the future, make a backup copy of your Registry before doing ANYTHING to it. Here’s how to create a text copy of the registry:
1. In Regedit, right-click on My Computer.
2. Select Export from the dropdown menu.
3. A Save As dialog will pop up. Give the export file (it will be BIG, 60 meg at least) a name and pick a place to store it. You might want to create a directory for this.
4. Click Save.
This will make a .reg file that can be pulled back into the Registry via Regedit by clicking on the File->Import menu item.
If you feel the .reg file is taking up too much room, you can make it smaller with this command line command:
type current-file-name.reg > new-file-name.reg
P.S. The .reg file is readable with a text editor, but don’t be tempted to modify it. A corrupted registry can make your system totally unusable.
use the run option and type in scanreg /restore and 4 dates should show up note the space between the g and the slash
Well, you went about this in totally the wrong way. Instead of getting antivirus and antispyware, you tried to remove a virus by meddling in your registry. Only a good programmer should remove registry entries. Obviously you did not know what to remove, thus remove the wrong things.
If you are using XP, you can do a System Restore, but if you think you had a virus, that will bring the virus back. So, take your choice. You can restore your system, or you can use a real registry cleaner like Microsoft’s Live OneCare Cleanup Scan, which will set restore points, but probably won’t restore the things you deleted. Or, you can do a System Restore then get antivirus and antispyware and run them like the rest of us do to remove viruses and/or spyware.
I’ve used Avast 4-Home, SpyBot and Ad-Aware Se Personal for 3+ years. I don’t have viruses on my computer, but I do have spyware. Everyone has spyware if you get on the internet.
You don’t.
You can only do a system restore.
Go ahead and try everything suggested by the others but you will ultimately find that it is a complete waste of time.
What you will wind up with is a really screwed up registry and then you will get the BSOD on boot if you try to repair it automatically.
I will spare you the lengthy detailed explanation as to why that is.
Good luck.
once you edit the registry the entries are usually gone for good the only hope you have if you are using XP is to use system restore
click Start >all programs >accessories >system tools >system restore
now click next then choose from the calendar a restore point you can see which dates have a restore point the dates are in bold lettering now click next now just follow any instructions that come on the screen
there is one other chance you have first uninstall outlook then reinstall it, registry entries should be recreated with another install
Yes. There are 2 choices. Do them in This order, skipping step 2 if step one works.
1. Do a system Restore. Go to Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Follow directions and restore your computer to an earlier time..select a date before you did the booboo.
2. Do a system Repair. This requires the operating system Cd.
I donno if there’s any apps that will recover the deleted registry items but what I will do is to look up the items that are missing on another working computer, then add those entries by yourself. This might sound stupid but it should work.
You might be able to use System Restore. Click on Start => Programs => Accessories => System Tools => System Restore, then choose to restore your system and follow the instructions.
This will only restore parts of the registry that are now missing, it won’t reformat your system or anything like that.
