Whatever you do, don’t go into the registry file and try to manually remove them yourself. Unless you’re an expert, messing with the registry file can really screw up your computer.
Why would he not use an anti-virus??? You do know that anti-virus software can prevent you from getting the viruses in the first place, right?
How to get rid of them without an anti-virus? Well, if you have an anti-malware program like MalwareBytes, you can use that, but that will get rid of mostly just Malware.
You can also try SuperAntiSpyware, but that will get rid of mostly just Spyware.
The only way to remove them manually is to figure out what they are and then track them down on your hard drive and then remove traces of them from your registry. Basically, you could spend a week just doing that… Or you can get an anti-virus and use that instead.
Here are a couple of the best anti-virus programs out there and they also happen to be free.
avast! (use only one anti-virus) > http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
Avira (use only one anti-virus) > http://www.avira.com/en/download/
I personally use avast! on all my computers and it’s extremely rare that I end up with anything malicious on any of them.

If he removed it without antivirus software, then he manually went and deleted the files, which is time consuming if you dont know what you’re doing.
I’d install AVG Free (cleans viruses) and Malwarebytes (cleans malware) on your computer, then run full scans with both, it’ll probably fix all those problems.
He probably reformated it. But that can be confusing and annoying for someone who doesn’t know what they are doing.
Try downloading malwarebytes

(not a virus, I promise)
It’s a pretty good program and the best part is that it is free.
