Just kind of a shot in the dark but maybe it’s a motherboard problem? It sounds like you checked the RAM and the CPU. And if it were either RAM or CPU you would notice the computer randomly shutting down even after you get into Windows and stuff, but correct me if I am wrong, but it sounds like once you get into Windows you are fine until the next time you turn the computer off? I agree with you that it does NOT sound like a software problem and is most likely hardware, so reinstalling the OS probably will just be a waste of time and a headache. Good luck.
I would try updating your video driverd, look up the motherboard and find the video drivers.
You say you don’t have an image of your system, but you do have a backup on an external HD.
If your system came with a recovery partition, I would suggest using that to reinstall all original software. Then you can copy whatever other files you need from your backup.
Otherwise, you will have to wipe your Hard Drives and reinstall everything from scratch. You may have a problem with your RAID setup.
You do know that one disk is constantly being backed up to the other disk. That’s what Raid 1 does.
I would run diskcheck just to make sure there isn’t a problem.
Anyway, the part about no seeing anything when you first turn on your computer is funny. I do wonder if your card is failing to post. The best troubleshooting step you could take is to try a different video card. If you can, try to use your videocard in another computer.
I would manually uninstall the video card drivers then reinstall an older video card driver.
You do litterally have to run the memory check for 24 hours to sometimes see if there’s a problem. If you suspect a memory problem then try to boot the computer with 1 memory stick.
