Nick you don’t explain if you are having "problems" with your PC so I am going to assume you ARE NOT. When you insert the CD the options come up asking if you want a "custom" installation. Pick that one and you decide "what you want and what not". Otherwise, get a drive scrubber and wipe everything off the drive and you can start all over again. System Mechanic Pro 7 or 4 has an excellent scrubber. I have used it several times without complaint. Word of caution. Make sure you REALLY REALLY want to wipe everything off the drive. You can’t pick and choose.
Use your Windows installation disk to format the drive – it’ll ask if you want a clean install and you’ll then see it writing zeros over the entire disk.
here is a useful video

It’s easy. Just put the disk in and if it doesn’t boot automatically from the CD select "boot options" when the PC starts up (or use BIOS if you don’t see that option and change the boot order to put the CD/DVD drive first in the list) and select "Install Windows XP". Format the drive in NTFS (quick format will be fine) and follow the onscreen instructions. Just make sure you’ve got the License Key ready! You will need it to activate Windows XP.
When it’s finished loading you will still have a few updates to install but that will be done automatically.
