Quote: And Norton’s definitions updates from many months ago should have prevented them.
Many months ago. Its no wonder. And erm, if you meant the malwares were created many months ago, then please make it clearer.
So lets see. Usually real-time protection ( auto-protect ) have lesser detection rates than a on-demand scanning ( manual scan ). Thats probably why Norton did little in real-time protecting. But Norton on the other hand has the HIGHEST manual scan detection rate. Its on par with Kaspersky.
And also, anti-viruses naturally do very little in blocking off spyware and trojan. I say one anti-virus with real-time doesn’t do very much in securing your whole PC. I recommend getting Spyware Blaster and Windows Defender. Or not Spyware Terminator or Spyware Doctor from Google Pack. They all consist real-time protection, which will definitely help in brushing off those pesky malwares that anti-viruses don’t catch.
New variants of old malware are constantly being developed by the ‘black-hats’ to avoid detection by signature-based anti-malware products. For example the Zlob trojan, the culprit behind Smitfraud, has almost 2000 different variants and the number grows daily.
This is why anti-virus apps such as Kaspersky are now issuing new virus defination updates on an hourly basis now. Weekly (Norton) or even daily updates just don’t cut it any more!
