Look here http://thexlab.com/faqs/faqs.html under Prevention and preparation for Maintaining Mac OS X. There is also under Beyond the book… you can read about Detecting and avoiding malware and spyware. It will tell you that you need AV on your Mac, but most Mac users don’t install any, including me. I did once but the AV or Anti-spy didn’t detect anything so I uninstalled them. So it’s really up to you if you want to install AV. Just remember this, stay far away from Symantec and Norton, they will mess up your Mac BIG.
Macs don’t need virus protection, you also don’t have to defragment them like PCs. All you really need to do is delete the files you don’t want anymore.
Mac’s DO need Virus Protection, escpecially if you are an avid surfer. Now it is true that the Mac Firewall is awesome and you would need your admin password to run most viruses, in this age VP is a must.
As for cleaning up your Mac, you can empty caches, delete unwanted files, repair permissions and many other ‘housekeeping’ types of things. Do a little searching on this site http://discussions.apple.com/index.jspa and even ask a few questions. Those guys are WAY better than all the Mac haters on these boards.
