A friend told me I should periodically erase the built up history created from sites I visited on the internet so it will work more efficiently . I understand disc cleanups but how do you clean up internet stuff? What does that mean?

Click start->programs->accessories->system tools->Disk cleanup.
There should be an option to clean up what you asked for along with more options to clean up temporary files.
In addition to what the previous posters said, you should also delete temporary files. If this hasn’t been done in a while, it might take a few minutes.
If you aren’t sure of what the different tasks do:
1. Delete history – This erases the web pages you see when you use the drop down button on the address bar.
2. Delete temporary files – Basically, when you visit a web page, a copy is made for quicker loading if you visit again. If you wait a long time between doing this, the file can get really big and slow things down.
3. Delete cookies – These are what stores your user name when you go to certain websites, which can be a good thing. Unfortunately, certain sites also put cookies on your computer for advertising purposes.
I use ccleaner to delete Internet files. I set it to erase temporary Internet files only.. It does much more but it is free.. Download it. Type in cclearner and it will come up.Good luck.
Tools, Internet Options, Clear History, Clear Temporary Internet Files, Clear Cookies
By doing this you can better protect yourself from spyware.
Go to Tools then to Internet options then Clear History and delete Cookies
In your browser, goto the "Tools" drop down menu, goto Internet Options, from there you should be able to delete your history as well as some old online files. This is the case for IE, I’m not sure about other browsers, but they should be similar
