you forgot to remove one thing:
remove the virus/spyware/tojan/whateveritis
get a good antivirus program, scan and delete the virus, then do the disk cleanup and defrag again.
and also, removing the virus would not help if you keep getting back to the sites that gave you the infection.
lastly, installing ubuntu will format the drive, and formatting the drive will remove all of ur current files and programs so the virus will be removed as well if you install ubuntu
You problem isn’t that your got a cluttered HD, it’s that your probably running too many programs at once OR lack that amount of RAM to run properly. 75% of the time when I see a persons computer, this is the problem.
20% of the time they have pop-ups/spyware/adware that is the problems and using avast and spybot generally fixes that problem.
Upgrade ram to 1GB minimum. (2Gb recommended)
Keep running programs between 28-36 if you on windows xp. You can find out how many programs are running by useing task manager. You can shut some down useing "msconfig" in the "run" commands to change start up options.
Install avast anti-virus and run a boot time scan when it asks. After that, run a full system scan.
Install spybot with tea timer and learn to use both and run a scan on your computer.
Use mozilla firefox to avoid bad websites (avast will block you from going to them too for double protection)
Run Disk clean up and then disk defragmenter.
skip registry cleaners…they are bunkware (my own word)
That should help you speed things up. Have fun with ubuntu, it’s a cool OS to play around with imho.
