It usually takes hours. :/ (I have Microsoft Security Essentials as well, and it takes me about 5 HOURS when I choose "Full Scan") But if you mean "clean computer" for a detected threat, then it should usually take a few minutes.
Thats too large of a gap in responding, it appears the microsoft security essentials isn’t responding. Malware can causes this, as will a low amount of ram available. Try running your pc in safe mode and then run the security scan.
On the quick setting, it should take less than 5 minutes. With the full scan, it could take over an hour or more, depending on the size of your hard drive and the amount of data that is on your computer.
I would close it down and try again later. If you start having problems with MSE, you could have malware on your computer. Try downloading and scanning your computer with Malwarebytes. (link below)
If this program works for you and you want to keep it, I suggest using the paid version. It is one of the best security program for your computer. Just remember to remove MSE because it may interfere with Malwarebytes and cause more problems.
It’s running Microsoft products. It will never be "clean."
