start>run>msconfig>startup to get rid of processes that start up on their own. just google whatever you dont know.
Adopt the same policy that you would for your own health. Take a prevention is better than cure approach for the PC, keep it free from viruses most importantly. Next to keep the drives fast and fit, make sure you dont load tons of junk, install only the programs you will need. Regularly run disk cleanup and clear out the temporary files that get created in the background. The drive has to be protected from catching diseases like fragmentation which lead to a debilitating performance.
Some general rules to increase computer speed,
1-Decrease the number of automatic startup programs by removing un necessary ones.
2-Clean your junk and internet temp files from each browser, for IE choose tools then delete browsing history.
3-Defrag your pc using a good disk defragger, i would suggest auslogics disk defrag which is free and very effective.
4-Use a ligh weight broswer such as Opera or Firefox and avoid IE7 (has been tested and marked as the slowest browser!).
5-Use a light antivirus such as NOD32 or PC-Cillin, and avoid Norton!.
6-Check you pc for spywares or ad-awares (ususally slow down ur system)…I would like to suggest some free programs like Ad-Aware and Spybot SD.
use Ubuntu – its a linux OS it’s what I am using right now. I used ubuntu on my cousins old 900mHz 256mb ram computer and it ran fast compared to it running windows. it also has better eyecandy than windows vista. you can google "ubuntu vs vista" and look at some videos.
upgrade ur RAM to support more running process..clean up ur pc regularly on old files..that should help
Hi!
Unfortunately, as Windows grows older, its performance deteriorates significantly. Sometimes, softwares like Registry Cleaner, Tuneup Utilities are helpful but still it does not re-vitalizes the whole performance that should a typical Pentium 4 based PC should have with Windows XP.
The best way, of course no software needed, is to take backup of your data like documents, photos, etc. and format the drive in which the Windows XP is installed and re-install everything. After this, your PC would be as good as new.

You can go into the control panel and delete all the items that you do not need. This will get all of the junk off of your computer. Make sure to restart afterwards. If that doesn’t work…you can save all the important stuff on your computer on a back up disk. Then with the recovery disk that came with your computer can give your computer a new start and clean all the unwanted stuff of of your computer.
Just buy a new one….
I have fixed alot of computers, mostly slow computers. People who have low specs usually complain about the speed of their computer. However, if you want to boost your computers performance, you should consider running fewer softwares on background. For instance, you should definetly change your Anti-Virus software to Nod32, runs smoothly and great antivirus software.
Hope it helps.
Kind Regards
Delete any unneeded programs and files.
Delete the temporary internet files from your browser.
Run a defragment on the drive.
First, your computer might have a virus, run an anti-virus scan. Next, you might have too many programs, go to Start>My Computer>Add/Remove Programs and uninstall anything you don’t use or care about. You could also get a free PC tune up with WindowsLive One-Care Safety Scanner:

I had this problem and tried deleting everything I didn’t need and "cleaning" up, but that didn’t work. What I ended up doing was going to the place where I bought my computer and buying a gigabyte of random access memory. It worked like a charm!
