You can download and scan your computer for free.
upon booting, the installed programs in the computer load at startup so that when they are opened later they do not have to load anymore, which may also be the cause of your slowdown.
however, because sometimes we install so many programs on the computer, these programs automatically register their applications to load at startup and you have to manually disable them.
the slowing may not necessarily be caused by a virus or any malware; the effects of which are much severe otherwise.
do the following to disable some programs to load on startup. but be careful because you might disable some programs that are necessary in the operation of windows. just choose those you think are programs that are not necessary to load on startup.
1. go to "start"
2. click on "run"
3. type "msconfig"
4. click on the "startup" tab
5. uncheck all of the programs that you don’t want to load on startup and that which may be causing the computer to start slower.
6. don’t forget to restart after changing the settings
Try doing a repair install on windows using your windows XP setup disk. Defragment your hard disks as well. That can speed things up. Also make sure you have enough RAM free for the main applications your opening. You can use Windows Task manager (ctrl + alt +delete) to check what programs are using up RAM. Be careful which tasks you want to end as if you close the wrong task wierd things can happen.
