A registry cleaner is a type of software utility designed for the Microsoft Windows operating system whose purpose is to remove redundant or unwanted items from the Windows registry. However the necessity and usefulness of registry cleaners is a controversial topic, with experts not agreeing on their benefit. The problem is further clouded by the fact that malware and scareware is often associated with utilities of this type.

The best freeware is probably GlaryUtilities which cleans the registry and junk files, etc. However, I’ve found the best registry tools are the ones which cost a little bit of money. Typically, the free cleaners find a couple 100 errors, whilst the paid cleaners are able to find 1,000’s of errors on your PC, making them more effective and worth-while.

Cleaning your registry is a good idea and as the other answer states ccleaner is a good program. However, if you are not sure what you are doing then I wouldnt recommend using it as deleting the wrong registry key can really cause you problems. I would recommend you use oncarelive clean-up tool. It’s an online scan and clean up of your registry and offered by microsoft. I use ccleaner and onecarelive and each find issues the othere didnt find. Just be very careful if you use ccleaner.

I would recommend that if you want some good Anti-virus or Registry cleaner, go to http://www.filehippo.com
Download CCleaner, here’s a link: http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ (This program will clean up any excess files on your computer, including Windows History Cleaner Browser History Cleaner Application History Cleaner Cookies Cleaner), also it is possible to mess up your registry when using any program like this, but that’s why they all allow you to create a backup file of the registry files you are deleting. If something go wrong you can just open up the file you saved, and it will reinstall all the registry files it removed.(At least that’s how it works with Ccleaner)
However for anti-virus i wouldn’t recommend going for the free stuff, go to staples or best buy and buy Norton 360. Its only 40 bucks at staples right know. Trust me
Good luck
