That is completely normal. I have Vista and I store almost everything on a different drive. On the Vista drive 40.7 GB is used and you are at 38.8.
with 46% free space. This is perfect to keep your computer running smoothly. If you want to add any more files I would suggest you add another drive.
If you want to clean up the hdd go to add and remove programs in the control panel and delete all the programs you dont use or want…then this…
1) from internet explorer—-click on tools>click on internet options>delete "temporaryfiles" ,"cookies" and "history"…
2)click on "start">computer>right click on "c drive">properties>click on "disk cleanup"..put a check in the box next to downloaded programs, temporary internet files, recycle bin and temporary files…click on "ok"…that will clean that up…
3) optional>download and run ccleaner..http://www.ccleaner.com/
version(2.20)..that will clean up everything on your hdd that the 1st 2 steps missed..its a really simple cleaner to use…
4) defrag your hard drive when done w/these steps..
ccleaner—–http://www.ccleaner.com/
to get the best performance from your hdd try to get it to 50% or above free space…..you can transfer your songs and picks to an external drive also….then no need to worry about back that stuff up, and your hdd will be a lot less bogged down……

40 gb is really not much space to be used up. The operating system is probably half of that and many programs now are at least half a gb and can run up to 8 gb. Music or video files can add up extremely fast. Defragmenting just rearranges the data, it doesn’t delete anything. The real solution is to get a larger hard drive, 250 gb is considered baseline now.

system restore is eating up your HD, try to clean system restore, and only keep up to date restore point only. will save you alot of space (gb),
what i did to my laptop is back up the whole drive C, then turn the damm system restore off, this way will also speed up my system and i dont have to worry about clean up system restore, in case something goes wrong i will just restore from my back up.
