1. Overclock your computer (HIGH RISK!)
2. Add more RAM
turn of programs running in the back ground defrag the hard drive tell u what go here and download this its free for 30 days or so it will do the job http://www.ashampoo.com/frontend/products/php/product.php?session_langid=2&idstring=1306
i recomend this to all beginers
there is seriously no need to do all the work from all the other answers..just go to control panel and uninstall 2 to 3 programs that you really do not need.
You may start from here: http://www.speedupyourcomputer.windowsreinstall.com/index.htm
Also try http://www.pcfaster.net/reglanding.htm
Also try to read and follow the suggestions from http://www.pcnet-online.com/content/general/speed.htm
It just might take a long time to reinstall Windows. If you do have a great backup, all of your Program disks, all device driver disks, then get ready to spend many hours doing so.
But you should have 512MB of RAM for Windows XP. Check your system at http://www.coastmemory.com
Make sure that you keep your SpyWare under control. I recommend that you go to http://www.download.com and get AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destory. Install, run, update and scan your computer with both programs.
Update and run your Anti-virus program scan.
Use DiskCleanup from System Tools of the Accessories section of your START menu’s programs.
Open My Computer, then right click on your C drive and pick PROPERTIES. Go to the TOOLS section and click CHECK NOW. Check both tests, then restart your computer. Let the tests run through completely.
Use Defrag, also from the System Tools section.
Good luck and Happy Computing!
if you just made a backup copy and then reinstalled it it would be the exact same after a ton of work. You could however, make a list of what programs you have installed on you computer, write down any other information about your programs and then make a drive image. i would then reformat and install windows again. i would just add which programs you want. if anything goes wrong you can always reinstall your image that you made.
