Free up disk space
By freeing disk space, you can improve the performance of your computer. The Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space on your hard disk. The utility identifies files that you can safely delete, and then enables you to choose whether you want to delete some or all of the identified files.
Use Disk Cleanup to:
•Remove temporary Internet files.
•Remove downloaded program files (such as Microsoft ActiveX controls and Java applets).
•Empty the Recycle Bin.
•Remove Windows temporary files.
•Remove optional Windows components that you don’t use.
•Remove installed programs that you no longer use.
Tip: Typically, temporary Internet files take the most amount of space because the browser caches each page you visit for faster access later.
To use Disk Cleanup
1.Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup. If several drives are available, you might be prompted to specify which drive you want to clean.
2.In the Disk Cleanup for dialog box, scroll through the content of the Files to delete list.
3.Clear the check boxes for files that you don’t want to delete, and then click OK.
4.When prompted to confirm that you want to delete the specified files, click Yes.
To use Disk Defragmenter:
1.Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.
2.In the Disk Defragmenter dialog box, click the drives that you want to defragment, and then click the Analyze button. After the disk is analyzed, a dialog box appears, letting you know whether you should defragment the analyzed drives.
Tip: You should analyze a volume before defragmenting it to get an estimate of how long the defragmentation process will take.
3.To defragment the selected drive or drives, click the Defragment button. Note: In Windows Vista, there is no graphical user interface to demonstrate the progress—but your hard drive is still being defragmented.
After the defragmentation is complete, Disk Defragmenter displays the results.
4.To display detailed information about the defragmented disk or partition, click View Report.
5.To close the View Report dialog box, click Close.
6.To close the Disk Defragmenter utility, click the Close button on the title bar of the window.
Run the Error Checking utility:
1.Close all open files.
2.Click Start, and then click My Computer.
3.In the My Computer window, right-click the hard disk you want to search for bad sectors, and then click Properties.
4.In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab.
5.Click the Check Now button.
6.In the Check Disk dialog box, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.
7.If bad sectors are found, choose to fix them.

1. Disable Indexing Services
Indexing Services is a small little program that uses large amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexes and updates lists of all the files that are on your computer. It does this so that when you do a search for something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the index lists. If you don’t search your computer often, or even if you do search often, this system service is completely unnecessary. To disable do the following:
Go to Start
Click Settings
Click Control Panel
Double-click Add/Remove Programs
Click the Add/Remove Window Components
Uncheck the Indexing services
Click Next
2. Optimise Display Settings
Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can waste system resources. To optimise:
Go to Start
Click Settings
Click Control Panel
Click System
Click Advanced tab
In the Performance tab click Settings
Leave only the following ticked:
Show shadows under menus
Show shadows under mouse pointer
Show translucent selection rectangle
Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
Use visual styles on windows and buttons
3. Speedup Folder Browsing
You may have noticed that everytime you open my computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing significantly:
Open My Computer
Click on Tools menu
Click on Folder Options
Click on the View tab.
Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
Click Apply
Click Ok
Reboot your computer
4. Disable Performance Counters
Windows XP has a performance monitor utility which monitors several areas of your PC’s performance. These utilities take up system resources so disabling is a good idea.
To disable:
download and install the Extensible Performance Counter List
Then select each counter in turn in the ‘Extensible performance counters’ window and clear the ‘performance counters enabled’ checkbox at the bottom.button below
5. Improve Memory Usage
Cacheman Improv
You should know what made your computer slow. Check the start-up programs and disable some nonsense ones. Un-install some unnecessary programs. De-frag your hard disk. Add some virtual memory.
Besides, after years of working, any OS can have many "rubbish" (like temporary files, unnecessary DLL, …), so I think it’s time to re-install your OS and enjoy your computer at full speed.
Good luck !
I recommend downloading a tool to do this sort of thing for you since it seems as though you aren’t quite advanced enough to understand how serious editing your registry / services is. With that said you should look into checking out a few of the following programs and websites.
http://www.pcpitstop.com/
Ccleaner.com (one of the best free tools on the net)
http://www.iolo.com/downloads.aspx (try out system mechanic, it’s one of the best optimization tools on the internet)
also worth checking out it is
http://www.perfectdisk.com/ (raxco perfect disk. It’s a disk defragmentation tool).
I recommend running the abovementioned tools in conjunction to a good antivirus / antimalware sweep, re-enable the services you need and use this guide to determine which services you do, and do not need.
http://www.devotedgeek.com/the-ultimate-guide-to-tweaking-useless-windows-xp-services/
Good luck
defrag your computer every other day, scan your computer for any viruses, uninstall any unusable programs in your computer. try to control or manage all your programs..
Don’t do those scams on the internet. Get a memory stick over 2gb and connect that in and choose ‘speed up my computer’
there are many programs that work really well and fix all problems from registry issues/ junk files/even spyware and security issues. Advanced System Care takes care of all of this, its one simple, safe and easy to use program from Iolo. And its also free.
http://www.download.com/Advanced-SystemCare-Free/3000-2086_4-10407614.html
end some useless processes / services.
add more ram to ur comp.
change the processor speed thru bios.
or buy a faster comp.
