My computer is becoming slower and slower. I need some help on how to speed up my computers boot, run and shutdown time. I am not strongly confident on trying different downloads to fix my computer but if you are 99.9% sure they will work recommend them.
I am running Windows Vista. I think that’s all you need to know to know if the programs or options are compatible.

The reason the computer gets slow is due to the registry files becoming corrupted, or messed up, in simple terms. These files tell the computer or laptop how to operate the software installed on the system. If any of these files get messed up, the computer is not sure what to do and this will really slow down the computer. The other scenario is where you download other software, screensavers, pictures, videos, or even music, and this will somehow change the settings on a registry file. When this happens, the original program that needs that file now has the wrong instructions in it. So, it will cause the computer to run slow, or in a worse case, crash.

Get a external hard drive and if u have a laptop, back up everything and delete the things u don’t use much
Best way to speed it up is to reformat the drive and reinstall windoze. If you’re not ready to do that just yet, try running various adware and spyware removal tools.
Any spyware and adware affecting your computer WILL slow it down over time. Removing these malware programs will speed up your computer more than anything else. Some good ones to try include:
adaware
ewido
spy sweeper
spyware doctor
Trend Micro adware remover
Don’t just run one of them and think that your problems are all solved. Run 3 to 5 different ones and you will be amazed at what all you find. Remove them all and remove any unwanted programs through control panel "Add or Remove Programs" icon and you should see a noticible increase in speed and performance.
do a virus scan. spy sweeper. ad-aware scan.

startmenu> type msconfig and hit enter in the search box. look at startup programs and disable ones you dont need (google them to see if you need them). then go to services and hide all microsoft services. google the remaing services if you dont know what they are and disable ones you dont want/need. also if you show all services including microsoft you can go line by line and look up the services (couple website out there that list every service in windows vista) and see which ones are system resource hogs and can be disabled. for me i disabled the server service which is used for network sharing stuff but i dont use it that much and that sped up my boot time.
now defrag all of your harddrives by going to my computer > right click a harddrive go to properties and tools click defrag. (may take couple hours)
