ccleaner.com – free and safe
CCleaner is free and relatively safe, just make sure you back up the registry before making changes and can restore it.
There is a lot of misconceptions about value vs danger of using any registry "cleaner".. Every registry has at least some invalid pointers, keys and missing references that are reported by the cleaners. But the fact is they are really irrelevant to the overall health and functionality of the registry. Many of these "errors" are just left over information from system changes such as uninstalling a program or changing a piece of hardware. In fact, these unnecessary entries are marked to be ignored when the registry is processed during boot up. You can compare these ignored entries to be as insignificant in processing time as it would take to load a text file, nanoseconds. And that is one reason why Microsoft doesn't bother cleaning them out. Another reason is because even though software written to run in the windows environment is suppose to conform to the API standard (application programming interface) as defined by Microsoft, a lot doesn't and the potential of removing incorrectly referenced data which could hurt the system versus just leaving it is a no brainer. Just be careful, if it was really that big of problem, Microsoft would supply a cleaner.
As far as speeding your system up, keeping your disk clean and defragmented and reducing the number of unneeded processes running is the best way, next to buying more memory.
