Usually the sound drivers in windows xp are not sufficiet enough to run the SOUND on most machines and you have to manually install them. Since i do not know the make and model of your machine here is a link to the website where you can obtain the correct drivers for it. I hope this helps.

First off, I’m sorry you have a compaq. You need to go to your my computer>properties>hardware>device manager and make sure the drivers are installed for your sound card. If you even have one. You might have to buy a new one.
go to control panel and look if its the defalt sound card…
if is it then uninstall the driver… reboot… and reinstall it…
I had this problem with my Dell and everything seemed to be in order when I checked it. Somehow a virus got past my virus scan and destroyed a couple files in my audio driver. They re-installed my audio driver (even though it didn’t seem that there was anything wrong with it) and it’s worked fine since. Hope that helps!
