The most common cause of computer freezes is a corrupt registry.
Most likely your registry is bloated and overstuffed with an assortment of useless pieces of data. The operating system while running your computer has to pick its way through all this excess material. There will be bits of programs which were not completely uninstalled, parts of programs which were never completely installed, fragments of miscellaneous data, useless drivers, and a multitude of other bits and pieces.

Could either be a virus or some internal system error.
I would personally download a program called "ErrorFix" (you can see it here: http://www.fastregistryfixes.com/errorfix_review.html) and then install it in safe mode.
You can get into safe mode by following this tutorial (http://www.pcstats.com/articleview.cfm?articleid=1643&page=2) and is basically where you start your PC without any of hte later programs / things that would slow it down that you might have installed.
After you’ve got it in safe mode, install that ErrorFix program. This will allow you to do a bunch of stuff like sort out missing files and back up the registry.
