most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

try spybot search and distroy, just run a seach for it.
It sounds like you have a spyware/addware/malware infection. These can be rather difficult to get rid of at times. Try using Spybot-S&D which you can download for free from http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/ and also try using Ad-Aware which you can download for free from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/products/ad-aware_se_personal.php
These two products together will remove most problem badware. If they don’t fix the problem, then, you should probably take your PC to a professional and have them remove the bad software.
To prevent this type of infection in the future, you can run something like Windows Defender, http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx Also, don’t download free crapware, like screen savers, free games, file sharing programs like Limewire etc., even free wallpaper installers, those types of programs are free for a reason…
