we have a 16yo gateway g6-400 w 384 of pc 100. P2 400 mhz It used to dual boot NT 4.1 / 2000 pro.
Now I have it 2000 pro / xp home though it only recognizes 256 in ram when booting.
Its a hunt for drivers but ok after, we keep it running as its the wifes first pc, and except for weak video a good pc.
I didn’t keep my AT&T 6300 w 10 mb HDD, 128 ram and 4.7 mhz 8088 processor
I agree with McGoo- a computer that old will not upgrade to XP. If possible I would use Windows 2000 which will run on the RAM and specs of 98 but offer more features and security. Also many of the programs designed for XP will work on W2K. For security you may not find anything out there to support 98 or 2000, but search at download.com where you can select the OS for programs.
Hard to offer much when you did not state a problem.
If the machine is only being used to monitor a machine, and not connected to the internet then a Spyware should not be an issue. Don’t have a clue where to find tools for an OS that old, give Google a shot.
Since the owner is only interested in one app, why not just format and reinstall the OS and app.
Ubuntu may not fill the requirement of monitoring his machine, and most likely won’t run his app.
Good Luck
You can get Spybot Search & Destroy to search for spyware on Windows 98. I would recommend probably formatting the hard drive and installing to a newer operating system.
It would probably be better to upgrade it to XP. It has better security but it won’t slow the computer down so much that it would come to a crawl.
I would suggest that you check the CPU on his motherboard to make sure that it is still in good shape.
Why he has a computer that old is beyond me it would be better to just to get a new one than to pay for general maintainance of one so old.
First things first, if you have opened up the computer and know the motherboard, audio card, and all the components in there you can install XP. ONLY IF YOU HAVE OBTAINED THESE DRIVERS(COMPATIBLE WITH XP).
I’m sure you can find free adware scanners windows 98 compatible on http://www.download.com or on some old software websites with a little googling. I would highly recommend obtaining the drivers for the hardware and going with the Windows XP approach if the system HD, Processor, and RAM allow it.
If you or he has XP yes put it on it’s much better than 98. Then again Ununtu is a good alternative……and FREE.
Good luck.
You are getting a lot of bad advise on these answers.
.
First, if is VERY common that a windows 98 machine will NOT upgrade to Xp. This is because of the RAM more often than the processor. Xp will run on a processor as slow as 200 MB, but it needs over three times the ram to run that Windows 98 required. So you may not be able to install enough RAM to make Xp run.
Second, if he is running a special program to monitor the machine, and doing it on a win98 machine, it is quite likely that the program is designed to run on 98, and may not run correctly on Xp.
Third, Use Spybot to scan for spyware and trojans, and you should be able to locate a win98 compatible version of an anti-virus program by searching the web.
Fourth – as noted by another – NEVER start an upgrade to Xp on a win98 machine without first locating and downloading all the drivers for the hardware your machine is using. This may or may not be possible, as some hardware never had Xp drivers written. Also, do you have the hard drive space to load Xp? A lot of win98 machines had drives as small as 4 GB. Xp will use up over a third of that just loading the program. Will there still be room for the program that monitors the machine?
