In total reverse of the short responses here, I have to say nothing is easy concerning the PC. And Microsoft keeps changing the rules by introducing a new OS every few years. Rather than choose the correct route of research and implementation of a paradigm change in better HARDWARE, THEN their "better" software (Vista now, the new WinME), they force the stale hardware issue and do not "mature" the operating system by not, for instance, making it resident in ROM and thus malware proof and instead they continue to add bells and whistles to the OS with the effect of "bouncing the rubble". Anyway, what I am saying is there is no quick fix or simple solution until we force change, NO MATTER what a most likely GREED orientated person may try to sell you. Bottom line is, we have to relearn every few years for each new OS, one that comes up short in improvement- security issues are not advances but are at best sidesteps, at worse complications.
OPTION: For some education, read this page here:

Anyway:
Nothing anyone has written here may work for your specific problem. An anti virus works by PREVENTING an infection, ergo, if you are ALREADY infected… I don’t see how it can help AFTER.
The Firefox thing is helpful for later, but if you RUN an exe you shouldn’t have- by clicking a variety of things it is possible, there is NOTHING on Earth that can protect you from yourself. Once a program is running, be it Word or malware, it is protected from being deleted by the system itself! A program that is actually running in real time has MANY techniques it can be programed to do to keep it from being stopped and thus capable of being deleted or rendered harmless.
Spybot and the like will remove certain infections, but are quirky and may not help you even if you spend time to deploy them, download their update, then spend anywhere from 10 minutes to 12 hours allowing it to scan your PC. Plus, these items, while having their uses, have a VERY hard time ‘killing’ infections that use a variety of techniques to stay running in real time.
The malware you have is apparently ALREADY running in your system, specifically in your Explorer queue, so even the BEST anti virus and malware stopper and remover may NOT help you with your current infection. Your system requires surgery. If you wish, you can download ‘Hijack This.exe" at:
http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html?hhTest=1
This is your "X-Ray machine". It will expose all the items buried in the Explorer queue and even allow you, if you can identify the exact listing (doubt it) enables you can remove it.
Backup all your files and data. Do you have a DVD writer, or external hard drive?
Go here:
http://www.internetinspiration.co.uk/roguefix.htm
http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix_En.php
Get these files and implement them per their included instructions.
They are your "scalpels". Two of them anyway. Follow the instructions carefully and you may just kick this thing, though much like pulling a tick out of you skin. You may get it all, or may leave the head in which may be rendered harmless in one aspect, but perhaps open another less one.
Do you know how to reinstall your operating system? Worse case, a clean install may be called for. To me it is minor as I have everything backed up on external hard drive and CD/DVD ROM. It only takes me 2-3 hours and I have a fast clean PC for a while. (XP)
Sorry for all the paragraph’s, but I feel you deserve to know a little from one point of view about the state of computing, but after hours of frustration with your machine, you deserve to know this point of view, though you may know or seek others..
When I worked as Tech support for an ISP, we I often suggested Avast! Antivirus. I can tell you from experience that THE worst anti-virus program is norton. So many so many so so many calls came in with problems related to that program. I advised them all to rip norton and install AVG or Avast. Lately, the newest AVG 8.0 is going down hill with so many added features, it’s becoming a nuisance.
I agree with those here who have recommended Avast! It’s free. It’s powerful. And is excellent with recovery and virus cleanup.
However, this does NOT sound like a virus, but more of an adware problem. that is a pop up advertisement, not a virus.
TO SOLVE YOUR PROBLEM:
Download Adaware 2008, update it and then run it. It will rid you of those pop ups.
Download Avast! Free Edition for future protection against viruses.
IMPORTANT:
Before you install any Anti-virus programs, be sure that any previous anti-virus program is uninstalled first!
What you have is spyware installed on your computer.
1) Stop using Internet Explorer and download Firefox for free – much more secure
2) Download Spybot Search and Destroy (free) and scan and remove threats.

or
http://www.bitdefender.com/
Make sure that, when you download an AV program and install it, always run virus scans in Safe Mode.
Restart your PC, tap F8 continuously until a screen pops up with various booting options.
Use the arrow keys to select Safe Mode, or Safe Mode with Networking if you need to update your AV file definitions.
Log-on. And run the scan.
Good luck!
