I just performed a clean install of windows xp and now i can’t change my screen resolution. I went to device manager to try to figure it out but it just shows a question mark over ‘Video Controller (VGA Compatible)’ I don’t know what the manufacturer is to try to find a driver which is what i have been seeing online is the thing to do. I tried to find out who made it with everest home but it just said unknown. Help!
sure, its desktop, gateway
alright, i got it fixed. I went to gateway, entered my serial number, got the driver for the monitor and installed. reboot, everything is good. Thanks

In device mgr, highlite the the video controller, right click & select properties and select update driver – follow the prompts to find a driver. if no luck, shut down pc, follow cable from monitor to pc-unscrew open box, remove card that was connected to monitor cable. remove card-write down any names models or id numbers. put card back in, close pc, recable, do a search for the things u wrote down – if they go to a video card u can usually get driver from manufacter site.
You need to download PCwizard and install and run it it will detail all your drivers needed for your computer when found look for your video card name and number and search the web for them either xp or vista
I think you need to go to control panel and open display options. Then click on the last tab which ( i do not recall the name since I have vista now) and from there you can change the resolution. You may need to go to advanced settings. Hope that helps.
Is this a desktop or a laptop? A name-brand or a home-brew?
If it’s a name-band then it should be a relatively simple matter of going to their website and checking out the two or three video card options that are availible for that configuration.
If it is a homebrew and a desktop, you are going to want to open it up and see if you can locate a card model or a chipset number on the graphics adapter.
Sorry I can’t be more exact, but there’s just not enough information in your initial post.
Peace,
