I can see the drive in the device manager and it shows up in the BIOS when I first boot up. When I run the Western Digital diagnostic software it detects the hard drive as well but it wants to erase the data in order to install it. Is there a way to get the data off the hard drive before it is installed or otherwise get My Computer to recognize it?
Thanks

There may be many reasons for this problem. I can give you a link that deals with hard drive problems. Some RAM/hard drive problems can be easily fixed yourself by using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful
1st off is there any data on that drive? Sounds like it's not partitioned or formatted for XP to recognize.
If there is data, you may want to try one of the Linux Live Cd's which will enable you to recover that data on that hard drive before you reformat it.
As Jordan Said..! (check if its formatted).
If so, I wanna ask u, have other OS installed in.?!
If so, u have a conflict in the File System..
it might be the NTFS,and also the FAT32.!
in this last case, Try to mount ur drive into other PC as a Secondary master and recover all ur data.!
enjoy it 😉
