1) Don;t put SP3 on any computer until Microsoft fixes the mess it’s created. That includes turning off automatic updates, because it’s those updates that are included in SP3.
As far as the drive goes, you can buy a drive adapter that will allow you to connect the drive as an external USB drive – the ones without cabinets go for about $15. Connect the drive and see if there’s anything on it. If there is, copy off all the files you need – to DVDs, to the internal drive – somewhere.
Then (or if the drive’s not readable), install the drive internally and install Windows to it. Copy the files back. (Make sure you have an anti-virus program running when you do that, so it catches any viruses you may have on those files. It’ll take longer to copy, but it’ll take less time than having to do it all over again because you infected the new installation.
sorry dude, you are totally screwed, you might want to try using an external hard drive case, you’ll be able to get most of the data out of it through your new computer that way, if you were password protected on some files, you’re really screwed. most of the stuff you can get from USB/external case for hard drive.
