I was wanting to clean out the junk files in my computer without purchasing a program to do it. This question is directed to a computer geek or someone with this knowledge. How do I delete or clean out the junk files in my computer for better performance? My computer is a couple years old and is a Compaq Presario SR1130NX and I use Windows XP. Thank you for whatever advice you send to me.

Try using CCleaner. Go to http://www.ccleaner.com for a free download. This will clear out temp files as well internet cookies and the like. CCleaner is a freeware and privacy tool that will clean up junk files and invalid registry entries.
Use the disk clean up tool.
go to control panel then go to add or remove programs. once you are there you can delete anything you want to! if you can’t find the file you need to delete then try disk clean up.
The easiest way
use ccleaner freeware program from
http://www.ccleaner.com
Follow these steps:
1. Go to Start – Programs – Accessories – System Tools – Disk Cleanup.
2. Choose the drive whose junk files you want to remove.
3. Follow the steps that follow.
This will primarily remove all the temporary and unwanted files in your computer.
A simple way is to go to "start," "accessories," "system tools," the "disk cleanup" and let it roll. If you’ve never done it before, it’ll take quite awhile.
click on start, open "run" and type in
prefetch
delete all the files and restart your computer.
The first time you turn it on it will be slightly slower, but after, it will be really quick! (This removes unused start-up files)
open start, click on "run" and type
cleanmgr
This will clear temp. files and unused registry files
Go to start/control panel/System and maintanence/performance and defragment your system
Those are the only methods I can think of that do not involve downloading software or buying new hardware. If your computer has lots of programs installed on it try removing the unused ones, (start/control panel/programs/add/remove programs)
Hope that helps!!
