First, you should run a free scan of your system at http://housecall.trendmicro.com to clean your system as much as possible before installing any further software. Once that’s done, here are some recommendations from available freeware to secure your system:
irewall: (listed in order of preference)
Comodo (http://www.comodo.com ), or
PC Tools (http://www.pctools.com/firewall )
Comodo recently released version 3.0 of its firewall, which adds an intrusion prevention component that’s very effective, though it does take time for it to learn your system, and requires some ongoing attention by the user to make sure programs don’t get improperly blocked. Comodo is one of the strongest firewalls available, freeware or commercial, according to the independent testing site matousec.com.
antivirus: (listed in order of preference)
Avira (http://www.free-av.com )
AVAST! Home (http://www.avast.com )
AVG (http://free.grisoft.com )
all provide realtime protection and automatic updates; all have ICSA and VB100 certification, but Avira has been among the highest rated in tests by several respected US and UK computer publications.
antispyware: (listed in order of preference)
Spyware Terminator (http://www.SpywareTerminator.com ) or
Spyware Doctor (http://pack.google.com )
either one will give you good, realtime protection, along with
Ad-Aware Free (http://www.lavasoftusa.com ) and
Spybot S&D (http://www.safer-networking.org ) for additional removal ability.
Hi! Minddoc is right—i have those software on my PC and its working just great!—cheers!
If you want free, download Avast free for home personal use. This will clean up all the viruses you may have. http://www.avast.com
Spyware, Download the free version of Superantispyware. http://www.superantispyware.com
A2Squard Free, from Austria. http://www.emsisoft.com

You should open "My Computer", open your "Drive "C", and open "properties", and click on "clean disk" wait while your system, analyzes your system. And then when completed click on "ok", and your system will clean up all the junk files.

First you say you need to clean unused items… then you say you are getting a lot of pop-ups, junk, and ads.
Which is it?
I would suggest that you are probably looking for far too many free things to download in the first place which are the rot cause of your problem… and that you would be better off investing in a proper security suite for your computer (antivirus, firewall, antispyware, etc) from a reliable vendor that is properly configured and kept completely updated…
Not downloading a bunch of freeware, shareware, crapware junk is the best way to keep your computer clean.
Learning how to properly uninstall programs and not infect yourself with malware comes a close second.
Good Luck
it sound like you have spyware…You could go to http://www.download.com and download ad-aware and spybot. install that two software and do a full system scan after you finish getting rid of all those syware, just uninstall that two program. ^_^ free, easy, and quick
