The websites I incontered all were free downloads, but not free registry cleaner. You had to purchase the software inorder to clean the registry on your computer.

Clean Registry and Optimize PC
Well you’re going to get two answers here.
Most people will tell you to use the free cleaner "CCleaner" which u can get from http://www.ccleaner.com – but this is BAD because it just tries to find as many problems as possible to make itself look good (why else would it be free)?
You need to be careful with the regsitry because it’s a crucial part of your system. If you screw up one of the important files inside it, you’re going to have BIG problems down the line… so you need to be sure the registry cleaner you use will be as "delicate" as possible with your PC.

CCleaner is NOT the best registry cleaner. CCleaner is a very good program to clean your computer. but not your registry

You should have a look at them, because they are both very good programs.

First of all, when you google "free registry cleaners", you’ll be directed to a bunch of malicious sites. If you used any of those, you may have some malware problems on your hands. You might want to download Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware to clean up your system before you do anything else. Then get CCleaner or Advanced System Care if you want a good free registry cleaner.
Do not click on Rockey’s link, it is malicious.

The free CCCleaner is the best..
Use CCleaner, Glary Utilities, and Advanced SystemCare. They’re the only junk and registry cleaners I’ve used that doesn’t screw up your system.
The only reg cleaner I trust is the one from TuneUp Utilities. I have used it on my computer and others for years and never had anything damaged. Try it from http://www.tune-up.com
It is 30 days free, plenty of time to clean.
If you want to clean your files, use C-Cleaner http://www.ccleaner.com
I do NOT recommend it for registry though, it messed mine up but does allow backups before ruining it…
