OK, here’s the deal. In order to fix:
hardware issues – you refer to the manuals, then try to reconnect the cables. If that fails, you can call up the company and ask for tech support, or perhaps send the parts back to the manufactures, if they are still under the warranty period.
software issues – you refer to the "readme," then try to reinstall the software. If that fails, you again call up the company and ask for tech support, or perhaps money back.
The point is, computer hardware and software are specifically designed by computer engineers, not by individuals, but in groups. These projects take months or even years to complete, with high quality controls. If you encounter a problem, no matter how much computer engineering (hardware aspect) or computer science (software aspect) classes have you taken, you are likely going to have to consult with the company’s tech support. Classes at college are merely a foundation of which you need to advance and specialize in a particular aspect of that discipline.
If the issue was "fixed" simply by repositioning the RAM and reconnecting a few cables, that’s an easy task and no smart customer is going to pay you for that. In the end, fixing computers service is rather a niche service market and won’t get you very far. You may even often feel helpless because there are parts that are just flat-out broken and can’t be fixed, yet the customer called you up because they think you "fix" computers.
If you still want to become a computer technician despite the above explanations, you would have to obtain either an associate degree or its equivalent from a technical/vocational school. In that case, please check out the forum I’m linking to check out hundreds of stories from others who are in the similar situations like yours.
