The question here is not whether or not I can upgrade XP to Win 7 because I know I need to backup my stuff and do a clean install etc. etc. – BUT can I install the *64-bit* Windows 7 OS even though I’m currently running the 32-bit version of Windows XP.
My processor is compatible.
Many thanks!

Yes!!!
If you want to UPGRADE to 64-bit, that isn’t possible since you’re running a 32-bit system. Same with a 64-bit; it can’t go to a 32-bit system without losing all your files. However, if you have a processor that supports it (which you stated you do), you can have a 64-bit system, all you have to do is backup your files and do a clean install.
*Edit* I just realized you said that you would do a clean install. To answer your question in a much shorter way, yes your system is capable of running a 64-bit Windows 7 (if all other requirements are met).
