Well, I had a problem and then I fixed it, but lots of my settings are lost. I always used to have a little thing on my screen show up when I changed the volume using the button on my computer. That no longer shows up. Also, on the taskbar, I used to have a battery meter on the right, just left of the icons next to the time. I would like to get these two things back. My computer is an IBM thinkpad T30 and I’ll give you some details on the problem I had earlier.
I got a bsod when windows tried to load, with the error c0000218 which said that the file c:\windows\system32\config\software could not be found, so I replaced it with the file at c:\windows\repair\software and the computer could then load, but my settings were lost here.
I just remembered something else which actually probably caused the problem. When I was desparately looking for solutions, I went into windows recovery mode and tried the command "fixboot" which said it would create new boot instructions or something like that… It didn’t colve my problem though. I think it might have caused these new ones. Is there any way to go back to the old settings??
one more little detail to add
Here’s the IBM downloads page for my computer. What on here might help me?

control panel power options advanced click the box that says show battery on task bar
control panel sound and audio
click the box to show on task bar
go to start, accessories and select system restore, select a date prior to all problems and see if that fixes things, if not, if u bought it new, use the restore disks that came with it it will reset to factory settings.
It appears you overlooked a small problem. You didn’t try reinstalling your computer’s drivers, did you? This sounds like the reason, because windows can’t detect ‘custom’ buttons such as volume buttons and certain sleep buttons. This may not be the solution though, since you said Windows wasn’t detecting battery levels. Do it the Geek Squad way and reinstall Windows.
You lost custom program setting available from thinkpad T-30.

Install program/drivers that match your operating system. if win XP, install drivers/program of win XP only.
Look for embedded program for t30 and reinstalled them. Most of drivers/ program/ utilities of T30 can be downloaded and reinstalled with any worry (& eyes closed) on your laptop
Warning:-
Only exception is BIOS version (1IET71WW (2.10)) [1st three BIOS related program on the list at IBM website] which you have to be extra careful and follow all instruction given on how to do it. If you want you can avoid it. But if you want, be careful and read instruction given before updating/flashing BIOS.
BIOS are operating system independent !st is BIOS update and other 2 are BIOS dependent. I always keep my BIOS updated but when installing those programs, I read instruction given carefully, since any mistake will make laptop non-functional and have to be send back to manufacturer for repair.
