Basically I can boot in safe mode but a clean boot won’t work (give the dreaded blue screen of death). If I can understand the difference then may be I can identify which windows file, driver or whatever is causing the freeze.

There are some differences when you boot into safe mode or do a normal boot. Safe mode only loads the minimum drivers and programs so the operating system can function. Basically this is a diagnostic mode in which you can see if a corrupted driver caused the problem or whether it is virus related or a bad program. Normal boot means that all your drivers, programs, and hardware are started like normal. That is why when you boot into safe mode your resolution is at it’s lowest function and no sound is available. Also you have the option of booting with or without networking which means that you can boot into safe mode with minimal internet access. However that’s the difference: Safe mode=Minimal function, normal boot=maximum function. Hope this helps you out.
Well, the good news is you can boot into safe mode. Most likely this is either a spyware\virus issue or a driver issue.
I’d recommend booting into safe mode and running your virus scan software. Also, download a program like Spybot (free) and run that scan as well.
Also, run an error check on your hard drive for good measure.
