Does the computer, not itunes, recognize the ipod? Do you have the ipod set to automatically open itunes when attached? Is it in manual or automatic sync? When I first bought my 160GB Classic once in awhile it would not be recognized in itunes. The reboot procedure did work for me. I put my ipod in manual sync and have not had that problem since. I also do not let itunes open when the ipod is plugged in. If I remember correctly the ipod will not open itunes when attached unless you check the box in the summary screen. If the computer will recognize the device have you tried starting itunes after, not plugging in when itunes is up and running? The problem is that all my ideas require the ipod to be recognized by itunes. If it were me I would find another computer that has itunes. If it does work it will want to sync to that computer and you will lose all your music. I would try to restore without syncing but it might not let you. The goal is to restore the ipod, maybe put it in manual sync, and maybe make it so itunes will not open when plugged in. I would do the restore bare minimum. Other 2 things I do not know. With the restore it should be out of the box new. All your settings and music will be gone. Then try again with your computer. I found this link to restore an ipod without itunes but it appears to work on only a couple older models. Any chance one of these are yours? Check out the link below.

I apologize in advance because I am sure I have been no helps what so ever. I always zero in on itunes and ipod questions because if I can help the asker if, and when, this problem happens to me I will already know what to do. Hope some of this does help. Good Luck.
Additional Comment: I found this. Not sure if you are willing to try it but it appears you can restore the ipod with this. Check out the link below.
