If you are doing it make sure of the file names by naming yourself. It should increase speed, but if it is stuff you use, they will have to be" unzipped " or reopened before you can use. Compressing frees up space, that always makes faster. The computer auto detects stuff you havent used very much lately and askes before proceding. If any you don’t want compressed appear, just uncheck them.
I also make backups to files I dont use much then delete from computer. More space= more speed.
Compressing will slow down your computer a lot while it’s going through all your files and compressing them, and it’ll slow it down a tiny bit afterwards because it’s often uncompressing a file you’re loading.
But it’s probably not worth compressing files at all, because the biggest files – programs and system files, pictures, music and videos, will not get compressed. That’s because they either are critical files that are needed all the time (programs etc.), or they are already compressed (in the case of pics, music, vids, etc.)
Defrag really won’t help much either unless you have a really old computer. It’s been years since I’ve seen defragging noticeably improve performance on any computer.
