i have recently recovered from a virus attack on my pc, and i now have some missing files that were most likely deleted during cleanup.
i don't want to lose all the software and data that i have accrued since i got the computer.

if you are able to get into windwos ( safe mode or not)
I think you can run
SFC (system file checker)
to correct any issues
you do need your install disk handy though.
( I know for sure thats on 98, I think its on newer o/s as well.,
The only way to repair windows os files it to boot from cd.
You do not have to format your drive and do a clean install.
Boot from the CD. Once the NTloader files are loaded hit R for repair.
Follow the onscreen instructions. It will ask you to choose the partition you want to install windows on. Choose your partition and it will say, windows is already installed would you like to format or repair. Hit repair and you are set. Windows will replace all of your dll ocx etc files. You will not lose anything at all. Good luck.
I can't say you can save your programs, but you can get your data back. For that you need to attach your HD as a slave disk to another HD having windows installed on it, and copy all data files to another disk, or to a cd. After that you can try other options, to recover windows etc. But most probably you will end up doing another installaton of windows.
