No,No,No.I used McAfee anti virus previously. On Jan. 1st my computer was infected with a virus via McAfee. What happened is I was prompted to buy 2010 Internet Security. This is a totally bogus product. It prompts users to pay $49.99 to purchase the product. What happens is users are charged double on their Visa card.Because this product is based in London,England users have no legal recourse to sue the bastards who provide this bogus product. The virus is called Skynet, and has hurt lots of computer users, including myself. It cost me $141.00 to pay a PC Tech to remove this virus.Ughh! He advised me that Mcafee is not a good product at all. There are many free anti virus products out there.I use AVG,completely free to download.Hope that helps.Screw McAfee.
Mcafee is good.
You have full protection and a firewall with it.
Personally, I wouldn’t use either. There both over bloated memory hogs that don’t do as well as advertised. I wouldn’t use free either. They are the worst of the lot. But everyone pushes them simply because there free. Not because they work so well.
You can go to the AVG page and read for yourself. You only get AV & antispy. No firewall, no malware protection & no root kit protection. It’s worthless.
Here they go again, Won’t tell the full truth.
Here is a link to the AVG page. Thought i would post this before somebody started spouting the glory of AVG.
http://free.avg.com/us-en/download-avg-a…
Why people want to keep lying about this piece of garbage is beyond me. I was a beta tester for AVG twice. I beta tested the 9.0 version. All you get is AV that doesn’t detect or remove Trojan malware. It has anti spy, That’s all. No root kit protection running in real time. No real time = infected. It’s full of faults positives, It runs heavy/uses to much memory, It doesn’t update it’s self, Sometimes refuses to update at all. It’s junk.
Avast isn’t much better. It doesn’t have heuristic scanning in the free version. Why anyone would want it is beyond me. With no heuristics your leaving yourself wide open to attack from infected pages and downloads. Also drive by downloads. If you get attacked heuristically Avast may detect it, But it will not remove it. If you don’t believe me about Avast you can read here. Notice at the bottom of the page it says 2006 -2010. That means it’s still up to date.

Avira, A lot like AVG. It does have better detection and removal than the other two. But what it does have is lots of faults positives. It will refuse to update it’s self, It will just stop running leaving you to believe you are protected when your not.
Why people refuse to tell the truth about these free AV’s is mind boggling to me. Why they would say a out right lie and tell someone that a free AV works just as good as a paid AV is mind boggling to me. How could anything with parts missing be good?
Kaspersky is the best you will get.
http://www.kaspersky.com/kaspersky_inter…
And it does have a fire wall. The best in the business. Don’t let anyone tell you it doesn’t. Read for yourself. Click on key features.
Learn to do your own research. People on here will tell you half truths and whole lies. Everything i have said here can be proven with just a little research.
MICROSOFT SECURITY ESSENTIALS.
Why anyone would want to download a free AV from the same people that brought us the windows running system is beyond me. They have been trying for years to get windows to work right. Hasn’t happened yet. We are suppose to believe that they can get a AV to work right even though they can’t get there running system to work right?
If your gonna pay Kaspersky is the best you will get. No free AV can hold a candle to it. There are a few paid ones like Norton & McAfee that can’t hold a candle to it either.
All the ones that they spout about on here will not keep a infection from happening. At the most they make a mediocre attempt at cleaning up afterward. Then it’s to late. A good AV that is worth it’s money keeps infections from happening at all. That’s called prevention. Only Kaspersky has that. It works and it works well. I know because i have used it for almost 3 years.
i hear good things about mcAfee, i wanna try it my self sometime, right now i got spyware doctor with antivirus, its a good program too, i think i would trust it better than McAafee, its all your opinion, what ever one catches your eye first is the one you should use.
Despite all the kvetching here you’ve seen, both are excellent programs. In fact, they are both among the top 5 programs available on the market.
The issue I have is that most ISPs only use an AV program in their "free" offerings, and *maybe* a firewall – if you’re lucky. That means there are several holes in your protection.
360, on the other hand is a full suite, and the 3.0 suite for 2010 is also considerably less "heavy," and unlike McAfee, doesn’t try to run concurrently with every single program you want to run.
ANY good suite will offer a LIVE scanner as opposed to one you run when you choose to…it scans all data coming into the computer as it arrives, not several hours, days or weeks later when you decide to tell your computer to perform a scan.
A good suite will also perform automatic updates for it’s definitions, and offer a firewall and pop-up and spyware protection as well, and even an e-mail scanner (for those using Outlook or similar client on their computer).
As for the posts in general…Norton (like *any* AV program) scans for malware, not *pirated* (i.e.: stolen) software…and in case there are still any people out there that don’t know it…pirated software is usually heavily "modified" shall we say? There is all kinds of malware (especially key loggers) added to them.
Freeware is *generally* comparatively crippled, or outright useless, but there are exceptions to the rule (Malwarebytes and Zonealarm’s Firewall are good examples, a first class scanner and Security Program and a world-class Firewall that are free…)
AVGFree is also an excellent example that proves the rule…if FAILS roundly. It has a detection percentage averaging in the LOW 60% range, and the industry considers anything under 80% to be an absolute failure! The irony is that the paid-for version of AVG is decent, and a second class live scanner! (However, it has other issues.)
As a back-up on-demand scanner Avast! (which is free) is very good…however, as a primary method of protection, it leaves some room for improvement.
In any case…keep your subscription active, and you will have few problems with Symantec’s Norton 360 3.0. But remember, NOTHING can keep your computer 100% safe, except never turning the power on.
a) New viruses are being cooked-up every day. If it is genuinely a new code, NO AV program will catch it. If it is mutated code, *most* will catch it.
b) Never going on-line is not a guarantee. A friend of mine tried to install a game with a disk straight from the factory…18 viruses later, he contacted the company and received a HUGE apology.
c) Hackers and Crackers look at an AV company’s claims as a CHALLENGE…after all, last winter (early 2009), a hacker cracked Kaspersky’s own website, and they refused to admit it or repair the flaw he’d exploited, even AFTER the hacker posted strategically edited excerpts of screenshots of the GIGABYTES of data he’d accessed!
Good Luck!
neither. Use AVG
I recommend McAfee, I have been using it for about 5 years now with no regrets. One recommendation, only install the Anti-Virus and the Firewall. All those other options that comes with it will cause problems, this from experience. Although no matter what security software you have none is 100% guaranteed to stop everything. One place I can tell you that you can get infected from is Automatic Updates from Microsoft. Hackers have been using this for a while now to infect computers.
Norton is not very good, and never has been. Why pay an annual purchase fee when you can use free Avira Anti-Vir. Also get the free Super AntiSpyware, free SpywareBlaster, free SpywareGuard, and free Zone Alarm firewall. All these are excellent products.
Well personally i’ve never used Norton, but i heard bad things,(slow computer, too secure etc) I’ve used McAfee Total Protection for along time, i’m satisfied. But yeah, if you want a good FREE virus protection, http://download.cnet.com/AVG-Anti-Virus-Free-Edition/3000-2239_4-10320142.html?tag=contentMain;contentAux
I used the free McAfee that my ISP provided for quite a while and liked it. Never had any problems.
I got a new computer with Norton Internet Security so used it. I found Norton Internet Security ran a little better on the old computer so I ended up putting Norton on three computers, I never have had any of the problems that others describe nor have I had a virus. There is an option called Early Load in Norton Internet Security that will cause your computer to take longer to boot because it scans all of the processes as they are loading. I turn this off as do many others. I miss some of the features that McAfee had but I like some of the features that Norton has. You have tried both so if you like the McAfee it’s good. We used it for quite awhile with no problems.
personally, id use nether. norton is def. not the best one to use.
norton gives false virus warnings and actually teams up with companys to stop u from using files a company doesnt want u to use.
for example. u can download games that people make for the psp for free. well when sony found out, they got mad and teamed up with nortan.
nortan then made it so all those games would flash a virus warning for anyone who tried to download them. nortan actaully stopped people from using those files, saying they were "infected" even though the files were NOT infected. they gave false warnings!
nortan also doesnt detect a lot of viruses and slows down the computer.
so norton isnt well liked. as for McAfee, u could use that.
but why pay when u can get a free virus scanner?
avast is free and its what i always use. it actually works better then both mcafee and norton. ive run a scan with both norton and mcafee (they came free for 30 days with my computer) and then used avast and avast was the one who caught the virus i had, not the other 2.
avast also has real time web protection and stops u from going to dangerous sites. avast isnt another jumy program, it really is the best. AND ITS FREE!
so if u MUST pay, then id say mcafee. cause norton sucks! but id also recomened u go with avast and save some money.
I will pick McAfee, I have been working in some big company, their internal computer are using McAfee. I dislike Norton.
Use a free one.
AVG is just as good as Norton or McAfee if not better.
It has more users thus having a larger database of viruses to scan for.
i’m using avast home edition . The new version has been released on their website. It s a freeware. You can register yourself on the avast website to recive the registration key . They provide timely updates (small in size, ie. In kb’s. Which s usefull for people with limited internet plans ). It s fully legal n it generates a virus recovery database to report avast about the new viruses .
To detect n delete malwares on your comp use malware bytes . Another free software . N a powerfull tool to clean your comp of malwares. I use these softwares myself .
