you might be having 1 of 2 problems (or both actually):
1- you have insufficient memory. i would recommend you get another 1gb of ram or expand your virtual memory. to do that,
right click on my computer and choose properties> click on the advanced tab> under performance, click "settings"> a new windows will pop up, click on "advanced" tab> where it says virtual memory, click "change".
now to get the idea of this, you will have 2 things to play with: where you want your virtual memory to be, and how big you want it to be. the top box lists all your hard drives and the paging file size in front of it, which is basically the virtual memory. so lets say you have drive C with paging file of 500mb and drive D with no paging file on. to change the size of C’s paging file, you click on drive C and in the middle of the window, change the size of the paging file. make sure you use something about 2000 mb initial and double that amount as maximum.
if you wish to make drive D hold a paging file "or virtual memory" click on drive D, and in the middle, choose custom size and do the same as above.
if you wish to know more about how virtual memory works, consider reading this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtual_memory
virtual memory is NOT better than RAM since the transfer rate is better on RAM
2- you might have a bad sector/cluster on your hard drive. now fixing this might be a lengthy process and it goes like this:
go to my computer, right click on the drive(s) you have and click properties> click on the tools tab > under error checking, click on check now> check both boxes and click on start
this might actually take hours/days to be done specially if you have problems.
good luck
From my experience, Dual Core Processors don’t seem to make much difference. What is the clock speed of your processor? I have Intel Celeron 2.20GHz and that works the same as a pentium 4 on my PC. Have you been doing Windows/Microsoft Updates, sometimes they help speed up your PC as well as fixing security holes, etc! You could do with a bit more RAM and a different Antivirus software. Use Microsoft Security Essentials or AVG Free Edition. They are both free and are rated higher than Avira Antivirus. Just incase, download Malwarebytes (search google) and Spybot S&D. These can help. Also, download ccleaner (www.piriform.com). This piece of software cleans out Temporary Files, and scans your registry for errors. If I were you, I would also do a disk defragment. (Start, Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter)
Hope this helps!
Dual core is not that much outdated as you are saying.
In my opinion, the problem is due to the amount of ram used up. There might be not that much free ram available to run other tasks perfectly. Try not to open so many background programs.
Also, many programs such as messengers, softwares etc. create an auto start up entry, to start themselves automatically when window starts. Remove any such program from the start up list, you don’t use every time you use your pc.
just do a format of xp ,install 2gb ram
