I’m trying to fix a few problems, and I’ve tried a few different scan programs, (Registry Booster & Registry Mechanic) but the shareware trials are scan only. in order to repair the errors, you have to buy the program.
anyways, the scans are turning up over a thousand errors. so i obviously need to do this.
also, I’m running windows xp

Glary utilities, or Advanced system care, are good, and free. And, yeah those "trial" versions always seem to find zillions of problems that they won’t fix, but I think a lot of it is show. Malewarebytes is a good free antivirus.
Ccleaner.com or EasyCleaner. These are the main ones that are free.

It works great and can speed up your computer, fix your registry errors, and defragment. Just play around with it for a bit. It goes really fast. They also have an upgrade to the pro version. I got this free on http://www.download.com by Cnet.
