A registry cleaner is a type of software utility designed for the Microsoft Windows operating system whose purpose is to remove redundant or unwanted items from the Windows registry. However the necessity and usefulness of registry cleaners is a controversial topic, with experts not agreeing on their benefit. The problem is further clouded by the fact that malware and scareware is often associated with utilities of this type.

In terms of a registry cleaner, most people will recommend you use a tool called "CCleaner" which is totally free.
However, I would not recommend using this tool as it does not actually perform a lot of good on your system. CCleaner basically just looks for "empty registry keys" and finds 30-50 errors. This is fine if you just want to keep your registry running smoothly, but if you have some problems you want to fix with a registry cleaner, it’s much more beneficial to use a tool such as "RegCure" which you can see at http://www.fastregistryfixes.com/best_registry_cleaner_tools.html
Having said that, CCleaner does have a very good temporary file remover,
The best free virus scanner is one called "Avast" which you can find at http://www.avast.com
My suggestion is avg or avast , both are free and powerful!
if you dont like the free versions of avg, avira, malwarebytes, or spybot, you could even try microsoft security essentials, as long as you have legit windows the full version is free
Yes. Avast 5 free and CCleaner are two of the best.
You can download them at CNET http://www.download.com
There are other free anti-virus too:
AVG 9
Avira AntiVir Personal 9
Microsoft Security Essentials
Panda Cloud Anti-virus
And other cleaners:
Glary Utilities
Comodo System Cleaner
Advanced System Care
Wise Disk Cleaner
First, the speed you will gain from a registry cleaner can be modeled by the following equation: a*(e-t)
where e is the number of errors you removed. T is the length of time since your last cleaning, and where a is 0. That’s right it does nothing.
As far as a free anti virus, there are tons of them:
AVG
AVAST
AVIRA
(never realized they all start with AV)
See the links below for downloads.
aVast, AVG, Avira are all free.
I’d stay away from reg cleaners though, they do more harm then good unless you REALLY know what your doing.
I am sure other answers will give you a great anti-virus that is free, HOWEVER, do not use a registry cleaner, it doesn’t improve your speed at all and if you mess it up, even with tools like CCleaner, it can make your machine useless! Please do NOT mess with the windows registry.
Avast, and AVG are both great free anti-viruses, Google them. 🙂
Ccleaner is free or you can buy it?, but it will do an average job of keeping tour registry un cluttered. I use System Mechanics 9 $50 USD but is good for 3 PC’s so you can share the cost. That is a one stop does it all program, cleans registry, deletes junk and temp files, defrags hard drives and memory, backs up registry. AVG 9.0 is the other freebie antivirus I would reccommend? Nothing like a purchased product though. I have used Norton’s since 2002 and it hasn’t given me reason to change.
