I use AVG free and malwarebytes free and have had a virus free computer for years.
IMO Avast antivirus
AVG Free
Avira
ClamWin (Open Source)
Don’t forget amlware protection either since it works at a different level than viruses. MaleWareBytes is a must for Windows PCs. http://www.malwarebytes.org/
I have used lots of anti-viruses. So I think I can give good advice.
1. AVG. The best one in my opinion of course and the one I’m currently use. You can download its free edition offline installer here:
http://free.avg.com/us-en/download.prd-afh
2. Avira. The second best. You can get it from here.

And I say dont go for Avast! It’s not as good as AVG and Avira. So I don’t recommend it.
After installing one of those, you need some other thins like an anti-spyware. I recommend SuperAntiSpyWare. You can get it from here.

I should say that you can multiple anti-spywares but only one anti-virus (It is also possible to have two anti-virus but it needs some configuration and it’s not for begginer users)
In any case, I also recommend to download Windows Defender. You can get it from here
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx
Ok, download ESET Smart Security… Put the username and password… Once that expires Google "NOD32 usernames and passwords" goto a legit site and try those out… It’s been working for me… Really good…
There are various free antivirus programs out there…. You just need to choose the right one 🙂
Personally I feel that Microsoft Security Essentials and Avast 5 are very good free softwares.
Hope I helped, and happy SAFE web surfing 😛
Avg works great. It also gets rid of any virus’s you may get and it updates and does everything pretty well. All in all Its worked better for me then McAfee

avg 2011 the best avg yet and it is free
My Choice for a good Free AV is Microsoft Security Essentials
http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
It’s free to All Windows Users

MSE (Best IMO), Avast, Avira, are all good ones.
The best I’ve ever had:

I use Avast , I have also got superantispyware and Malwarebytes. I recently changed to Comodo firewall which seems fine and I seem to boot up quicker. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans Hackers etc. I also use Windows Defender from the Microsoft site. It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly.
